2. JAMES HOWE (James'), born in Haffield, Essex, England, baptized 23 March 1633; married 13 April 1658, ELIZABETH JACKSON, daughter of William and Deborah Jackson of Rowley, Mass., supposed to have been born in England about 1635. She was one of those unfortunate victims of the Salem witchcraft delusion. She was tried on 30 June 1692, and executed on Gallows Hill in Salem, Mass., 19 July 1692. The memory of her is now held in high esteem by her descendants. During the witchcraft craze some trouble had ,arisen between her family and that of one of her neighbors, and the neighbor's child, a little girl, having been attacked with some kind of, fits, Mrs. How was charged with bewitching her, and in those times suspiaon was fatal. The ministers were called in to see the girl and hear her testimony, and that of her parents, but though the family tried to persuade the girl to call "Goodwife How" a witch, she refused to do so. Mrs. How's bearing throughout the trial was such as to indicate the highest type of womanhood. Some of the witnesses testified that they "often heard her speaking of those persons that raised these reports of her and we never heard her speak badly of them, for the same. We never heard her revile any person that hath accused her with witch-craft, but pitied them and said I pray God forgive them for they hann themselves more than me." The husband was stricken with blindness and one of the most touching scenes in the course of the, prosecution, was the father being led by one of the daughters, twice a week to visit the mother in prison. One of the girls went to Boston, and sought executive clemency, but in vain. The story is sad and sickening in all its details, but it reflects no discredit upon the unfortunate victim. She spoke with prophetic accuracy when she said of those who were persecuting her, that they harmed themselves more than they did her; as Mr. Upham Wells says "There is no more disgraceful page in our annals, than that which details the testimony given at the trial and records the conviction and execution of Elizabeth .How." Later legal proceedings were instituted to recover damages for her execution, which resulted in an allowance being made in 1711, of f 4-14 s, to Elizabeth,s daughters Mary and Abigail, and to "James How, Martha How and Sarah How, being ye children of her'only son John How, deceased." Among the receipts preserved in the Essex County archives "of ye relations &c of ye Sufferers in ye year 1692," is that of Isaac How (a descendant of Abraham How of Roxbury,) who married Elizabeth's daughter Deborah, as follows: "May I, 1712, Recd on behalf of my wife Deborah How Two pounds Seven Shillings in full. Isaac How." James died I5 Feb. 1701-2. His will dated 19 Nov. 1701, and proved 11 March 1701-2, mentions his daughter "Dabora," his other two daughters Mary How and.Abigail How, who have taken care of me for several years." The will also mentions "my deceased daughter Elizabeth Jackson's children," also "my grand-daughters Martha How and Sara (unmarried).
