  • Notes
    • In 1859, Edward Howe, in company with his brother Leavitt, made his home upon a large farm in Princton, N. J., purchased by his father, and still in possession of the family. In addition to scientific farming, Mr. Howe became a citizen of much Iocal importance. Not a college graduate, he was devoted to the welfare of the local College, and rendered valuable service especially in quiet acquisition of lands then deemed essential for the future use and today occupied by academic buildings. In 1872 Mr. Howe became President of Princton Bank; he continued as its head until his death, a period of more than fifty years, "a unique condition in the history of the N. J., Banking Institutions," during which period the bank had become one of the strongest in the State. He was an organizer, and for a period, President of the Princeton Savings Bank. A founder in 1870, of the Jersey Cattle Club, he lived to be the sole survivor of the original association of breeders of high grade cattle. He was known as "The Father of Bay Head" a well known resort at the head of Barnegat Bay. The settlement begun on barren shore lands in 1871, stands as a monument recording the foresight, patience and unquenchable courage of Edward Howe. (pp 247-248)
